People have many reasons for wanting to learn to shoot; here are just a few:
These are dangerous times; home invasions, robberies, car-jackings. It is true that most people don't experience these events, but some do. After all, the odds are against you winning the lottery, but someone has to win. Some people would rather have a gun at home and not need it for 10 years, than to need it and not have it. Someone once said, A gun is like a parachute; if you ever need it and don't have it, you will probably never need it again. Even if you don't feel the need to get a Concealed Handgun License, it is legal in Texas to carry a gun in your car, as long as it is out of public view. Having a flat in a bad part of town can give you a helpless feeling.Research has shown that the murder rate drops as the percentage of concealed handgun licenses rises.
No, not to shoot the opposition, but to show support for the 2nd Amendment. It was put there for a reason, and if people act like it will always be there, they run a risk. There are political pressures on the Constitution these days, and the Bill of Rights, especially the 1st and 2nd Amendments. Some people get handguns, and learn to use them, for no other reason than to share the experience of other supporters of "the right to bear arms". After all, the 2nd Amendment is the reason we have a 1st Amendment.
While hunting is more often associated with rifles, there are people who hunt with large-caliber pistols. People often embrace handguns first, then move to rifles, and vice-versa. Campers and hikers sometimes have unexpected meetings with bears, coyotes, wolves, mountain lions, feral dogs, and other critters. Safety in these cases requires at least a .357 Magnum or even .44 Magnum, but these calibers are not for the uninitiated.
Some people just enjoy the shooting sports, and there are many governing bodies for these sports, which include target shooting, Practical Shooting, Cowboy Shooting, outdoor Defensive Shooting Drills, Tactical Shooting, long-distance shooting, etc. One can win a variety of awards, medals, and trophies, without a huge financial outlay.
Perhaps most satisfying to many people is the boost in self-confidence that comes from mastering a potentially dangerous device, and the feeling of self-control that comes with it. It takes a certain level of maturity to safely handle a firearm. That's the real reason generations of men have taught their sons (and daughters!) to hunt; not because they want them to kill animals, but because of the empowerment that comes with learning to handle, with skill, safety, and confidence, a firearm. Reading about it won't do; you will have to experience it.
